Caldera opened to the public on August 26, 2011 with Why Does It Matter, a collaborative installation by Caldera founders Cris Brodsky, Crockett Bodelson, and Sandra Wang. The installation featured 360 sculptures with a combined mass equaling the volcano base. The sculptures and the volcano were made from a mixture of clay and adobe collected from several areas near Santa Fe.
